How To Install Windows On Hetzner Dedicated Server
Installing Windows on your Hetzner server is simple and free! Hetzner is a popular cloud provider with a big data center in Germany.
Sometimes, you need Windows on your server for work or to use it as a remote desktop (RDP). However, Hetzner charges around $80 a month for a Windows license. In this guide, we’ll show you how to install Windows for free.
Which Windows Can I Install?
Hetzner doesn’t support Windows 7, 8, 10, or 11. These versions aren’t made for servers. You can install:
- Windows Server 2016
- Windows Server 2019
- Windows Server 2022
- Windows Server 2025
What You Need:

Step 1: Request KVM Access
Contact Hetzner support to get KVM access and the Windows ISO link. They will add the ISO and KVM to your server in about 10-20 minutes.
Step 2: Install Windows
Log in to your server once you have KVM access. You will see the server screen like it’s a monitor.
Boot the server using the Windows ISO they added. The installation will begin, and it will take about 10 minutes.

Step 3: Enable Remote Desktop (RDP)
After Windows is installed, enable RDP to connect to the server. By default, RDP is off. Search for “Remote Desktop Settings” in the Start menu to turn it on.
Step 4: Connect to Your Server
Open the RDP application on your computer. Enter your server’s IP address and click “Connect.” Then, enter the username and password you set during the install. Click “Connect” again to access your server via RDP.
